There are a variety of steel tools you can choose from to do a specific kind of job for you. For pavement breakers, there are about four steel tools that you can choose from depending on what you are working on. Each one has their own specific job to carry and it is important that you should know them.

The most commonly used of steel tools for breakers is the moil point. It is a solid bar of case-hardened steel that’s pointed at one end with a shank and an upset collar on the other. They are used for general-purpose demolition of brick and concrete as well as rock and asphalt. The advantage of the moil point or bull point is its sharp point. This allows the breaker to make a small hole that slowly deepens until the sides of the point are in contact with the rock. Its effect is like a wedge trying to split an object.

Another breaker tool is the chisel point. It is constructed like a moil point only it has a sharp flat edge. The chisel point is best used for trimming corners and splitting seamed rock. And also, when you encounter a hardpan in trenching, you can use the chisel point to slice off some rock to reach the desired elevation. An improvement of the chisel point is the Superkut chisel. It is designed for breaking concrete faster and with less effort and also with less frequent need to sharpen it. It is faster in breaking concrete because of its wedge design and a rounded cutting edge which provides easier penetration and therefore breaking larger sections of concrete.

Asphalt cutters are primarily used for cutting and trimming out the edges of laid asphalt and not harm the existing surface. Asphalt cutters should not be used as a concrete demolition tool as the material used to make them is not up for the job. If you are dealing with an asphalt surface with concrete and some cobblestones mixed in beneath the surface, an asphalt-concrete wedge is to be used instead of an asphalt cutter. The asphalt-concrete wedge is a rugged tool made for such severe service areas as mixed asphalt and concrete pavements

If you are dealing with clay surfaces, breakers should be used with clay spades. The clay spade is useful in loosening compacted clay or dressing up the foundation edges. Like asphalt cutters, they should also not be used on concrete as they were not made to perform well on such surfaces.
